A Colyum Of Thoughts From Here There, Yonder (By W. BRODIE JONES) It was my fortune Monday to sit with other county chairmen of the State at a conference and banquet in Raleigh and hear information from eve witnesses of the persecution of the Armenians and of the deplorable condition in the Near East where thousands will perish unless Ameri can aid is given. All of us have heard, and some oi 11S have doubted, the gruesome tales of the persecution of the christian na tion of Armenia, but I doubt if any of you have really gained insight into this period of persecution unequaled in human history for its deliberate cruelty. As a result of this persecution dur-jno- the war the country came from its ravages depleted of clothing and foodstuff. Two hundred and fifty thousand babies are dependent upon charity for their lives, seventy thous and adults are without clothing and food, neither of which is in their country. To America the task has devolved g-uise ot war. It is expected that the people thru out this county, as they have upon every other occasion when the appeal to the heart was made, will amply pro vide for the twenty-one orphans as- f signed Warren. These orphans to be provided for at the small sum of sixty dollars each. The campaign will be launched during the early part of February. Twenty-one lives are dependent upon Warren's doing its duty we will not be found wanting at the roll call of the faithful. 'Doing common things well makes us do uncommon things better." Jones On Tax Question Total We had something to say in a former issue about the privileges al lowed the farmer under the new law in respect to deducting his debts from his assets and returning the re mainder in for taxation. We assum ed that this was the purpose of the law, but upon this point there has been disagreement. But there is one point that should be made everlastingly clear for all time to come, i. e., that an owner of real estate should not be compelled 919. 16. to list it for its "true value in money" M cy me for them two " lvo -THio-vKr !and own only an equity. For instance, the taxpayer nas u home worth $4,000. He lists it, or the Supervisor does for him, at $4, 000.00. But, he has given a deed of trust or mortgage on that homq. to the extent of $2,500.00. His equity is therefore only $1500.00. It is etern ally iust that he should not pay taxes on more than $1500. IF the party who holds the note secured by mort gage pays taxes on $2500.00. And yet that very thing has been done heretofore. A tenant buys a mule at $200.00. He gives that mule in un der the new law) at $200.00. He owes $200.00 for him and has given a mortgage on mule and crop to se cure payment. The man who holds the mortgage should give it in for taxation, but the man who works thr. n ule has no equity' except that which may be in excess of $200., if any. Should a man pay taxes on his debts?. If it b argued that the man with the farm has his $1500.00 of equity plus the $2,500.00 in cash , borrowed and therefore he should pay on $4, 000.00, then who pays on the "evi dence" (note) of that $2,500? Isnt this making the real estate pay taxes on debts? If the holder of tne note lists it, isn't that making real estate pay 6 per cent interest on the note plus taxes on note, and the hold er pay taxes on note, too. In other words, $4,C00.00 of real value pays (Confirmed On Second Pag) 0001 OS'OS Total. 1919. 23. The members are called to gather in the Court House at one o'clock once each month for consider ation of matters of welfare relative to the body. The absence of Judge Kerr who was to address the farmers was explained by the secretary who stated that a boiler explosion in the Court House interrupted Judge Kerr's court and kept him busily engaged during the latter part of the week. The sec retary made a few remarks relative to the opportunity offered the farm ers by the association and plead that each member of the county unit use all influence possible for increasing the membership of the association to twelve or fifteen hundred members. Mr. R. E. Williams, a member of the county executive committee, urg ed the importance of the organization and also the remunerative value of be ing a mmber of this body which was a unit in the chain of Southern cotton counties fighting for just and com mensurate returns for the cotton pro ducer. It was decided by the body to launch a one day campaign for the 165.00 purpose of membership during Fcb day to be anouriced in 2?'2n e next week's issue. A larger member ship will make this a reality, officers stated. This was the first game of the sea son between the two schools, and the third game for Wise, having defeated the Palmers Spring High School in wo former games. i There will be other games between these two teams, and the outlook is that they will be both close and ex citing. The Norlina team is heavier and is well coached in team work, while in individual playing Gooch and Coleman featured for Wise. During the rest periods the "scrubs" of Norlina won from the "scrubs" of Wise by the score of 8 to 3. This was quite an interesting game. Time 10 minute halves. Referee Harris, Norlina.
